“千里之行，始于足下” Famous Chinese philosopher Laozi said “a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step”. Many things are possible if we have the appropriate methods, focus our mind and put in enough practice, whether it is about doing that perfect plank, losing weight or meditating.
Most of us know that it is important to eat healthy, exercise, not to smoke or drink, but when it comes to execution, our minds don’t seem to be able to control our thoughts. There are several ways we can handle this and we will go through these briefly here.
Setting SMART goals
Holding yourself accountable by setting SMART goals is a good way to understand where you are and where you need to be. Goals that are specific, measurable, action-oriented, realistic and timely will help keep you focus on the important steps that lead towards the finale. We will write a longer post to give you examples to illustrate this point later.
Meditating every day
It is essential to train our body, but training our mind is no less important. Sitting in isolation and looking inward help train our attention and reduce stress. Other benefits of meditation include increasing awareness and helping understand what is important in our lives. You can start by finding a quiet corner and sit for 5 minutes every day. Eventually, you will start enjoying sitting longer periods of time.
Finding a buddy
If you lack the discipline to hold yourself accountable, you can find someone else to help you. You don’t have to do it alone. If you want to run 10K, get a running buddy; if you want to lose weight, contact someone who also wants to lose weight; if you want to have better flexibility, find a friend who enjoys stretching. Two of you can share tips and motivate each other.
Hiring a trainer
Sometimes your friends may not share the same interests or may have demanding work and personal schedules. They may not have the necessary knowhow or discipline either. This is the time when hiring a trainer or coach is your best option. A qualified trainer will start from a physiological and fitness assessment, set reasonable goals and teach you the foundations of a well-balanced lifestyle.
